There are foods that you should eat to help prevent breast cancer and then there are foods you need to avoid. Here are four foods you should strike from your diet today:
Bad fats: Saturated fats and trans-fats found in junk food, meat, butter, cream and other full fat dairy products increases the risk for breast cancer. In a recent seven year study of more than 2,500 breast cancer survivors, those who followed a lower fat diet, consisting of 33g of fat per day, reduced their risk for the recurrence of breast cancer by 24%.
Red meat: Grilling or braaing red meat creates carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines (HCA). Red meat also contains amino acids that stimulate the production of insulin and increases oxidation. These are all risk factors for breast cancer. One study showed that women who ate well-done meat three times per week, increased their risk for breast cancer by over 400%.
Alcohol: Drink alcohol in moderation. Women who drink more than three or four alcoholic drinks per week could increase their breast cancer risk. A recent study showed that women who drink two to five drinks per day are 41% at higher risk for breast cancer than their non-drinking counterparts.
Grapefruit: This colourful bitter fruit could elevate your levels of oestrogen, which increases your risk for breast cancer. In a study published in the British Journal of Cancer, women who ate a quarter or more of grapefruit per day, increased their risk for breast cancer by 30%.
There you have the four type of food you should ban from your diet right now to help you stay breast cancer free.
