Do you suffer from dandruff and use an anti-dandruff shampoo to keep white, flaky scalp at bay? Then it's time you start looking at natural remedies for dandruff instead!
Anti-dandruff shampoos don't only turn your hair dry and frizzy - many also contain chemicals that natural practitioners say are best to avoid. Coal tar in particular, which has been a primary ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoos for decades, is actually a known carcinogen.
“Medicated shampoos may work temporarily, but the dandruff usually returns,” notes Trevor Cates, a naturopathic doctor based in Utah in the United States. “They're not a long-term solution.”
Five alternative ways to help you control dandruff
#1: Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is a mainstay ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoos because of its powerful anti-microbial properties. Simply massage a few drops directly into your scalp, or add some to your regular shampoo.
#2: Apple cider vinegar
Dr Mehmet Oz swears by apple cider vinegar for a number of ailments. The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar inhibits the growth of yeast. Make an apple cider vinegar rinse by mixing equal parts of the vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Wet your hair with the rinse and leave it in for 15 minutes before rinsing with clean water. Do this once or twice a week.

#3: Coconut oil
This ancient remedy isn’t only excellent for dry skin, but dandruff, too thanks to its anti-fungal effects. Massage about four tablespoons of coconut oil into your scalp every day and leave it on for an hour before washing your hair.
#4: Baking soda
You’ve heard that baking soda is a great all-purpose cleaner – well, it helps clean out the yeast on your scalp, too! Massage a handful of baking powder into your wet hair, then rinse out.
#5: Sea salt
Massaging a handful of sea salt into your scalp before showering will slough off a lot of the dead skin cells and scales.
