In the study, run by the American Geriatrics Society, the researchers assessed and followed 1967 people who already suffered from osteoarthritis for 18 months.

At the start of the study, 20% of them were considered to be socially isolated, and by the end of the study, 18 months down the line, an additional 13% of the group were considered isolated. 

Worse, the initial group also reported being in worse pain, had more difficulty walking, struggled to think clearly and were depressed.
