And now, new research confirms it’s not effective for strengthening bones either.
The study involved 180 postmenopausal women. All of the women in the study had osteopaenia - a bone-thinning condition that increases the risk of fractures and is often a precursor to osteoporosis. The women were assigned to take either a placebo or one of three doses of fluoride: 2.5mg, 5mg or 10mg.
According to the study published in the
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, after one year, there was no difference at all in bone mineral density between the different groups.
In fact, this isn't the only study that shows that flouride is ineffective in preventing bone mass... Other studies over the years have shown that fluoride not only fails to protect bone in older people, but actually increases the risk of bone breaks and fractures.
The latest study wasn’t set up to measure fracture risk. But it’s worth noting that only one group made it through without a single fracture... The placebo group.
Of course, the problem with fluoride goes beyond its failure to protect thinning bones...
