Three foods that may be behind your arthritic joints
Arthritic joints can make everything - from picking up a pen to taking a walk - completely and utterly painful and miserable.

If you're familiar with this feeling, you're not alone. In the United States alone, every one in five adults have doctor-diagnosed arthritis, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While there's no way to make your achy joints disappear forever, eating anti-inflammatory foods like fatty fish and olive oil can help. Other foods can increase your odds of a flare-up - here are three of them…

Three foods to avoid if you have arthritic joints

#1: Soft drinks
It’s no secret that soft drinks are brimming with sugar, which puts you at risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In addition, sugar consumption triggers the release of inflammatory ‘messengers’ called cytokines, says the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. When researchers looked at data from two large studies spanning 30 years, they found a link between soft drink consumption and arthritis risk. Women who drank more than one soft drink per day had a 63% higher risk of arthritis compared to those who didn’t drink soft drinks at all.

#2: Tomatoes
It’s true that tomatoes are anti-inflammatory foods. However, if you suffer from a specific type of arthritis called gout, these red fruits can make your arthritic joints worse by triggering serious pain, according to new research. Researchers surveyed 2,051 people with gout, 20% of whom reported tomatoes as a trigger. They then analysed data from 12,720 people without gout and found that eating tomatoes increased the levels of uric acid – an underlying cause of gout – in their blood.
#3: Omega-6-rich oils
You’ve probably heard of omega-3 fatty acids, the healthy monounsaturated fats found in foods like salmon and walnuts. But what about omega-6 fatty acids? Truth is, you’re probably consuming too much of them since omega-6 fatty acids are found in oils like corn, sunflower, safflower, soybean and cottonseed, which are plucked in just about every packaged food on the supermarket shelves. That unhealthy ratio can wreak havoc on your joints – research shows that any ratio bigger than 10 to one can cause problems like inflammation, asthma and cardiovascular disease.
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, try get your ratio down to two or three to one. This actually banished inflammation in study participants with the condition. One simple way to reduce your omega-6 intake is to cut back on foods like processed foods, meats, fried foods, butter and egg yolks.
Easing your arthritic joints may be as easy as eliminating these three foods from your diet!
