Your personalised pain management plan…

Before I found this plan I was living on handfuls of pain killers and anti-inflammatory, but they only relieved the pain for a short while… I was so slowly poisoning myself. I was overweight, inactive, eating badly and depressed.

This wasn’t the life I wanted to live so I started reading up on natural alternatives to managing my pain and getting my life back.

My pain management plan:

Reduce inflammation naturally, inflammation doesn’t only cause pain but damages the joint. Luckily these supplements can help and can be the cornerstone of good pain management.

For Inflammation:

  • Ginger Extract - A 2008 study in the British journal Food and Chemical Toxicology showed that ginger acts as an anti-inflammatory, along with many other positive qualities. At least two additional studies have found similar effects in ginger extract. It’s possible that dried ginger, such as the powdered spice or ginger capsules, is a more effective anti-inflammatory than fresh ginger.
  • Omega 3 – Omega 3 is the clean-up hitter of supplements. It eases inflammation and pain caused by chronic pain. Omega 3 is my staple supplement.
  • Cod Liver Oil – In a study, 86% of patients with arthritis who took cod liver oil had reduced levels of inflammation which causes cartilage damage.
  • Vitamin D – A number of studies have linked low levels of vitamin D with increased levels of chronic pain. For me, I’ve seen huge benefit with my join and bone pain.
  • Capsaicin – Found in chilli peppers, it soothes pain and can be found in a tropical cream is useful for all kinds of pain.
For Stiffness:
  • Quercetin – Hydroxytyrosol extract from olives, red grapes and red onions all contain the natural anti-inflammatory quercetin.
  • Glucosamine sulphate – When it comes to joint pain I think glucosamine supplements have some of the best data research out there. Strong evidence for pain relief. I can feel when I haven’t taken my glucosamine, my joints are stiff and sore.
  • Turmeric – The bright yellow spice contains the active compound curcumin. Which has a variety of powerful anti-inflammatory actions and helps with stiffness of the joints.
For Pain:
  • Acetyl-L-carnitine – Many studies have found acetyl-l-carnitine eases nerve pain and it regenerates damaged to nerves by pain.
  • SAMe – Offers natural pain relief. Some studies found that it’s as effective as prescription painkillers.
  • Devils Claw – A study published in the journal of Joint Bone Spine, revealed remarkable results for chronic pain sufferers who used Devil’s Claw to reduce their pain and improve their mobility
Your lifestyle change:
  • Diet – Add fruits and vegetables high in anti-oxidants a good meal plan is a Low GL diet.
  • Keep moving - like an interval walking programme and especially swimming. These are both low impact activities on your joints, but will keep them oiled, because the more you move the more flexible the join will be and reduce stiffness and inflammation.
  • Stop smoking and excessive drinking – They just add to the inflammation.
  • Calcium & Magnesium – add to your daily intake, to build and repair bones and help with pain. Eat red meat, it’s bone building enzymes only found in red meat and can’t be substituted.
