New study finds that the DASH eating plan relieves gout by lowering levels of uric acid

For the study, researchers looked at over 400 participants who followed either the DASH eating plan, which features high amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy as well as low amounts of saturated fats and general fats, or a typical American diet, consisting largely of processed foods and high-sugar drinks and eats.
What the researchers discovered was that those who followed the DASH diet had healthier blood pressure readings as well as lower levels of uric acid. According to the Arthritis Foundation, uric acid crystals are known to cause the inflammatory arthritis condition known as gout.
For some participants with gout, the DASH eating plan’s effect was so strong that it nearly matched the effectiveness of drugs they normally used to treat the very painful condition, according to researchers.

Researchers conclude that dietary changes can offer a safe and effective way to treat gout

According to the team of researchers behind the study, these findings strongly suggest that dietary changes offer a safe and effective way to lower uric acid levels to prevent gout flare-ups for people with mild to moderate gout who don’t want to take drugs to treat the condition.
“Results of this trial are good news to patients with high blood levels of uric acid or those at risk for gout. A dietary approach to prevent gout should be considered first-line therapy,” said Dr Edgar Miller III, study senior author and professor of medicine at the university.
“This study suggests that standard dietary advice for uric acid reduction – which is to reduce alcohol and protein intake – should now include advice to adopt the DASH diet,” Miller said in a news release.
