Weight loss is a difficult thing to achieve for most people. After all, it takes a lot of time and effort to eat well and work out regularly, and most of us live jam-packed lives. But what if we told you that five minutes a day is all you need to invest in your weight-loss efforts?

According to Sonya Angelone, RD, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, making small tweaks rather than drastic changes is all you need to do to reach your goal weight. Here are three five-minute weight-loss tricks you can easily squeeze into your schedule!

Three ways to lose weight that aren’t a total time suck

#1: Start your day with water instead of coffee
Most of us can’t start our day without a cup of coffee. If this includes you, you need to put this habit to bed. Most of us wake up dehydrated, and coffee isn’t a hydrating drink (that being said, research has confirmed that coffee doesn’t dehydrate you either). Apart from the fact that dehydration makes it easy to mistake thirst for hunger, it also slows down your metabolism. By starting each day with a glass of water, you’ll make sure you’re well hydrated and keep your metabolism humming. Don’t forget to drink water throughout the day, too – two cups before each meal has shown to be very effective at helping people lose weight, especially if it’s very cold.

#2: Focus on fresh fruits and vegetables at mealtimes
Fruits and vegetables may not be your favourite part of a meal, but they sure are important. Whenever you go to have a meal, fill up at least half of your plate with these foods first. This won’t only fill you up on health-boosting nutrients, but also ensure that you’re getting enough of your daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. Some great choices include frozen fruits and vegetables, lettuce and avocado because they’re easy to prepare.
 
#3: Eat a snack in the mid-afternoon every day
Snacking on something filling and healthy in the mid-afternoon will make you less likely to overeat at the next meal – not to mention raise your levels of dopamine, the alertness neurotransmitter. Opt for something with protein and healthy fat or unrefined grains like chia seeds, oat bran or flaxseed meal. Our favourite mid-afternoon snacks are a simple bowl of Greek yoghurt and fresh berries, and a third of an avocado with cottage cheese and salsa. Yum!
