Revealed: The winning combination for reducing your risk of weight regain
Weight regain is very common among dieters, especially crash-dieters. In fact, only about 5% of people who lose a large amount of weight manage to keep it off for more than a year!

While this statistic is sobering, fortunately there's a winning combination that can help you avoid weight regain, which was revealed in a recent animal study by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in the United States.

Keep reading to find out what it is...

Reduce your risk of weight regain by combining a calorie-restricted diet with high-intensity interval training

The study, which was done on mice, found that combining a calorie-restricted diet with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) – a form of interval training that burns maximum calories in a minimum amount of time – is a solution for avoiding weight regain.

More specifically, it found that in the presence of a calorie-restricted diet, HIIT preserved muscle mass and had a bigger impact on the way the body uses glucose for energy. They published their findings in the American Journal of Physiology.

“One of the major problems when you restrict calories on a diet is that you lose muscle mass and, as a result, your metabolism slows down to accommodate the restriction of food,” explains Eric Plaisance, PhD, an assistant professor of exercise science in the UAB School of Education. “Eighty percent of people who lose weight by dieting gain all of it back in a four- to five-year period.”

Avoiding weight regain is also important for preventing serious health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure

Reducing your risk of weight regain isn’t only important to make sure you look and feel good – it’s also important to prevent serious health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure and many other issues associated with obesity, points out Plaisance.

So, if you’ve almost reached your goal weight and are worried that you’ll pile all the weight you’ve lost straight back on when you do, consider going on a calorie-restricted diet and doing HIIT workouts to avoid weight regain.
