Four secrets to maintaining a healthy weight as you age
Ever wondered why it's harder to lose weight as you get older? We'll sum it up for you: Your metabolism slows with age.

Does this mean that midlife weight gain is inevitable? Of course not. In fact, scientists are coming up with exciting ways to help rev up your metabolism again!

Here are four secrets to maintaining a healthy weight as you age that will also boost your energy levels and help you sleep better.

Want to feel firmer, have more energy and sleep better as you age? Check out these four tips…

#1: Get your caffeine fix
Good news, coffee addicts! As caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, your daily java jolts can help you burn between 98 and 174 calories per day. Tea has similar effects – according to one Japanese study, a cup of brewed tea can raise your metabolism by 12%. The researchers attribute this benefit to the catechins in tea.
#2: Opt for organic food

Canadian research tied organochlorines – pollutants from pesticides, which are stored in fat cells – to a greater than normal dip in metabolism, perhaps because toxins interfere with the energy-burning process. Other research suggests that pesticides promote weight gain. For this reason, make sure you always choose organic when buying fresh fruits and vegetables.

#3: Focus on fibre-rich foods
Numerous studies have suggested that fibre can kick-start your metabolism and help you burn up to 30% more fat. Some have found that women who eat the most fibre in foods gain the least weight over time. On average, you should aim for 25 g of fibre per day. That’s the amount in about three servings of fruits and vegetables.
#4: Drink down cold water
German researchers found that glugging down six cups of cold water per day can increase resting metabolism by about 50 calories daily, which is enough to shed almost 2.5 kg in a year. The rise might come from the work your body has to do to heat the water to body temperature.
