Warning! This common cough medicine could kill your child...

by , 06 June 2013

If you're taking benzonatate liquid cough capsules, beware! They can cause serious side effects in children under the age of ten… It may even kill them straight away.

A number of children have died from ‘accidental ingestion’ of this drug - and others have ended up in hospital.

The main problem is this medication, which is not approved to treat children under ten - looks like sweets.

And it only takes one or two of the capsules to put a child at serious risk of death.

The impact on children is brutal - and very, very quick. Accidentally ingesting benzonatate causes tremors, convulsions, cardiac arrest and coma. This can happen within twenty minutes of taking the capsules and deaths can come within just hours.

Make sure you keep all your medication - but especially this one - in a child-proof container... Far out of reach of your children and grandchildren.

Better still, switch to a safe, natural cough remedy, one that can’t kill your child.

Try this next time you have a cough...

Add fresh ginger pieces to chicken soup when you’re sick. It has antiviral and antiinflammatory properties and can help fight the cold and throat and chest infections.

To relieve a tight chest, coughs and sore throat, mix the following ingredients together in a pitcher and drink:
  • A few slivers of ginger
  • 1 Tablespoon of honey
  • 1 Tablespoon of lemon
  • 1 Teaspoon of cinnamon
  • A couple of drops of liquorice extract
