Four kitchen pain remedies that are safer and more effective than common pain killers

by , 04 October 2013

Do you suffer from some kind of chronic pain? Arthritis... Back pain... Neck pain... Migraines? Chances are you've taken a common NSAID like Ibuprofen or Naproxen to deal with it. But did you know that the odds of dying from taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) after just two months are around 1 in 1,200. That's a scary number! Luckily, there are several pantry picks for pain that actually outperform common meds. Here's a look at some of them…

When you think of dangerous drugs, what comes to mind first?

Heroin? Cocaine? LSD?

How about pain killers?

You read right!

Pain killers and adverse drug reactions are the 5th leading cause of death behind HIV/Aids, heart disease, cancer and stroke!

But that doesn’t mean you have to live in pain. Here are some effective natural remedies you can use to erase pain from your life instead.

Treat pain naturally with ingredients in your kitchen cupboard…

Natural pain remedy #1: Ginger

“When Danish researchers asked achy people to jazz up their diets with ginger, it eased muscle and joint pain, swelling and stiffness for up to 63% them within two months,” reports ivillage.com.

The reason?

Ginger contains a potent compound called gingerols, which prevents the production of pain-triggering hormones. And you don’t need to take a lot of it either. Simply add 1 teaspoon of dried ginger or 2 teaspoons of chopped ginger to your meals every day.

Natural pain remedy #2: Vitamin C
“In a study in Arthritis & Rheumatism, osteoarthritis sufferers who consumed the most vitamin C (an average of 500 milligrams per day) reported less knee pain and were three times less likely to experience a progression of their symptoms over seven to ten years than those consuming the least –  possibly due to the vitamin's protective effect on cartilage and bone,” writes Dr Oz in the Huffington Post.

So snack on vitamin C-rich foods like guavas and red peppers if you’re plagued with joint pain.

Natural pain remedy #3: Olive oil
As Nutrition & Healing’s Dr Jonathan Wright says: “Scientists at the Monell Chemical Centre in Philadelphia found that a compound called oleocanthanol that’s found in freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil works just like ibuprofen in its ability to inhibit pain.”

While you’d have to drink a lot of olive oil to get these pain relief benefits, eating a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil prepared food is a great step in the right direction.

Natural pain remedy #4: Turmeric
“Studies show turmeric, a popular East Indian spice, is actually three times more effective at easing pain than aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen, plus it can help relieve chronic pain for 50% of people struggling with arthritis and even fibromyalgia,” according to ivillage.com.

So there you have it: Try these natural pain relievers before you opt for dangerous pain killers. It could save your life!
