Breaking news: Sugary drinks could be the death of you!

by , 20 March 2013

Apart from a short-term energy boost, sugary drinks don't hold any health benefits. Now, there's even more reason to steer clear, as a study has found that roughly 180,000 people across the globe die each year due to sugary drinks! Here's how to wean yourself off them before it's too late...

It’s no wonder concerned parents limit their children’s intake of sugary drinks.

Data from the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases Study has been analysed, and the results are shocking.

Sugary drinks increase your risk of dying from diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease!

Presented at the Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2013 Scientific Sessions,  it was revealed that sugary drinks have caused 133,000 diabetes deaths, 44,000 cardiovascular deaths and 6,000 cancer deaths, says Top News Arab Emirates.

So it takes just one daily sugary drink to become a diabetes statistic.

And it doesn’t even help to stick to ‘diet’ cold drinks, women who drink diet sweetened cold drinks tend to drink more of them than those who drink normal cold drinks, says News24.

You can also significantly decrease your  risk of developing depression by limiting the amount of sugary drinks in your diet, as four cans or cups per day of sugary drinks will make you 30% more likely to develop depression than if you drink none, says FSP Health.

But it’s not just the fizzy cans of sugary drink you need to worry about…

“We know that sugar-sweetened beverages are linked to obesity, and that a large number of deaths are caused by obesity-related diseases. But until now, nobody had really put these pieces together,” adds ABC News.

And just because it’s not carbonated doesn’t mean fruit juice is healthier for you than sugary soft drinks.

In fact, fruit drinks iced teas and even fruit juices often contain up to seven teaspoons of sugar in each cup of drink, says LowCarbDiets, so they’re just as bad for you!

So what can you drink?

Replace all sugary drinks with water.

If that seems too harsh, try adding some fresh fruit to flavour the water.

One more health benefit of swapping sugary drinks for water…

Swapping sugary drinks for water will also clear up any acne you may have, says FSP Health.

All the more reason to save your money and your health by going for water instead of sugary drinks!
