Modest weight gain can cause dangerous heart problems...
To reach these findings, senior study author Ian Neeland, an assistant professor of internal medicine at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and his team examined MRIs for 1,262 participants. These participants were part of the Dallas Heart Study – an ongoing multi-ethnic study of adults in Dallas County.
The process was comprised of tests that researchers behind the Dallas Heart Study did between 2000 and 2002 and again between 2007 and 2008. Neelan and his team examined the results from these tests to determine the heart’s left ventricular mass and diastolic volume, mass-to-volume ratio, ability to eject blood and wall thickness.

The team found that while modest weight gain can cause dangerous changes to the heart, small amount of weight loss
can have the opposite effect and improve remodelling of the heart.
“The take-home message is that weight gain is linked to abnormal changes in the heart muscle
,” Neeland reported. “Regardless of the weight you start at, gaining weight damages the heart, whereas losing weight
improves the heart.”
