Is low stomach acid causing you heartburn, indigestion or reflux? This single supplement will help you find out
Can you believe that in the year 2008, $25.6 billion was spent worldwide to treat the uncomfortable symptoms of heartburn, indigestion and reflux? It makes sense when you think about how many people pop over-the-counter proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Prilosec and Nexium like they're candy...

The trouble is that these medications may be adding fuel to the fire. Plus, they often have very bad side effects! The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has even issued warnings that high doses and long-term use of PPIs may reduce the absorption of essential nutrients like calcium, magnesium and vitamin B12, as well as boost your risk of bacterial infections and bone fractures!

While most people believe that heartburn, indigestion and reflux is caused by an overproduction of stomach acid, sometimes the opposite is true. Read on to learn about Hypochlorhydia, or low stomach acid, which is also a very common cause of these stomach acid problems...

There are a number of factors that can cause stomach acid problems

There are many risk factors that point to impaired gastric acid secretion, including bloating, gas, burping, heartburn, indigestion, reflux, diarrhoea, nausea, constipation and food allergies.

If you suffer from a digestive problem like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you’re even more likely to experience these stomach acid problems. Additionally, other conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis and lupus have also been associated with insufficient gastric acid output.

Here’s how to determine if you have low stomach acid and what to do about it if you do...

Betaine HCl will help you figure out if you have low stomach acid

The single supplement that will help you figure out if you’re suffering from low stomach acid and help you treat it is called betaine HCl, which increases the level of hydrochloric acid in your stomach that’s necessary for healthy digestion and the assimilation of nutrients from food.

To find out if you have low stomach acid, do this simple two-step at-home test using a betaine HCl that includes pepsin and contains 500 to 650 mg of HCl per capsule:

  1. Eat a large, protein-rich meal (170 g of lean or red meat is ideal). The betaine HCl supplement helps your body break protein down, so you shouldn’t take it unless you’ve eaten protein in your meal.
  2. Take one betaine HCl capsule halfway through your meal. Then, finish your meal and continue with your day or evening as per normal.

After taking the betaine HCl capsule, one of two things will happen – either nothing will change, meaning you having low stomach acid. Or, you’ll experience stomach discomfort like heaviness or burning, which means your stomach acid levels aren’t lower than they should be.

If you do experience discomfort, don’t stress – it will subside in about an hour. To feel better quicker, you can mix a half-teaspoon of baking soda with water and drink it. You should do this test a few times if you’re unsure of your results. Just make sure that you’re eating sufficient protein each time you do the test.

Taking betaine HCl regularly will help you normalise low stomach acid

If after doing the test a few times you conclude that you have low stomach acid, you can start taking betaine HCl regularly to help you normalise your levels. Try increasing your dose of the supplement by one capsule at each meal until you feel some sort of discomfort. Then, cut your dose back to the previous, lower dose and maintain that dosage. For smaller protein meals, you should take fewer capsules, of course.

Taking a betaine HCl supplement regularly will power up your digestive system, helping it to work better, as well as help you restore normal stomach acid levels. Therefore, in time you’ll be able to wean yourself off the supplement.

If you’re currently taking any kind of heartburn, indigestion or reflux medication prescribed to you by your doctor, you should have a chat with him or her before you start taking a betaine HCl supplement.
