Weak sex drive in men is linked to intense exercise

A recent study by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that looked at 1,100 men over the age of 18 found that men who followed high-intensity exercise regimes had weaker sex drives than those who followed lower-intensity regimes.

Study finds a link between weak sex drive in men and high-intensity workouts

To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed the men about their exercise habits and sexual history, including sexual arousal, desire, activity, attraction, fantasies, appetite and more.
 
The men were runners, cyclists or amateur endurance athletes, so the researchers divided them into groups of short and long workouts as well as light, moderate or intense exercise regimes. The researchers also divided them into low, moderate or high sex drives.

After poring over the results, the researchers found that the men with weak sex drives had become uninterested in sex or were too tired to have sex. They also found that the men who did shorter workouts wanted more sex.
 
This interesting finding prompted the authors of the study to make a recommendation to fertility doctors...
 
The authors wrote, “Clinicians who treat male patients for sexual disorder and, or counsel couples on infertility issues should consider the degree of endurance exercise training a man is performing as a potential complicating factor.”
 

Past research suggests weak sex drive in men can be improved with exercise

All that aside, a report published by the Endocrine Society in 2012 said that weak sex drive in overweight, middle-aged men with pre-diabetes can be boosted by losing weight. The researchers behind this report concluded that weight loss can reduce instances of weak sex drive in these men by a whopping 50%
 
“Doctors should first encourage overweight men with low testosterone levels to try to lose weight through diet and exercise before resorting to testosterone therapy to raise their hormone levels,” Dr Frances Hayes, co-author of the study, reported.
 
Losing weight not only reduces the risk or pre-diabetic men progressing to diabetes but also appears to increase their body’s production of testosterone,” he added.
