Wake up with this banana, blueberry and green tea smoothie

by , 25 February 2016

I don't know about you, but I just can't start my day without a refreshing smoothie. Ditch the caffeine and opt for a fresh blend of produce and superfoods instead. Not only will this give you a serious energy boost (minus the crash that coffee brings about), it's also a far tastier and more nutritious way to start your day than a cup of java.

This banana, blueberry and green tea smoothie is one of my favourite breakfast smoothies. It's ever so refreshing and helps to wake you up with the healthy addition of green tea. I know it might sound like a bit of an odd combination at first, but trust me, it's actually downright delicious!

Banana, blueberry and green tea wake-me-up smoothie recipe

Serves: 1

You’ll need:
  • 1 green tea bag
  • 4 tbsp boiling water
  • 1 medium banana, fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • ½ cup low-fat plain yoghurt
  • 200 ml low-fat milk (you may substitute this with a nut milk of choice – almond milk works well)

What to do:
  1. Place the tea bag in a cup and pour over with boiling water. Leave to steep for about five minutes.
  2. Squeeze and remove the tea bag from the cup. Set the cup of tea aside to cool for about five minutes.
  3. Stir the honey into the tea until it dissolves completely.
  4. Add the banana, blueberries, yoghurt, milk and tea to your blender. Blend on high speed for around one minute or until completely smooth.
  5. Decant your smoothie into a tall glass and indulge!

The benefits of this wake-me-up smoothie

  • Bananas are high in potassium and low in salt, which promotes healthy blood pressure levels. They also contain a high dose of tryptophan (which your body converts to serotonin), which helps reduce depression and gives your mood a boost.
  • Blueberries are high in antioxidants, which promote healthy skin as well as help neutralise free radicals in your body. Free radical damage is what leads to chronic disease like cancer, heart disease and age-related conditions.
  • Green tea is a remarkable fat-burner. It also contains an array of nutrients and antioxidants that promote brain function, leading to heightened concentration and productivity levels.

Enjoy!
