Combining pure, raw honey with fresh lemon juice isn't only good for weight loss, but also for better health and digestion.

In fact, many cultures have been combining these two healthy ingredients for their digestive health benefits for countless generations!

Read on to learn about the properties of honey and lemon juice that promote digestion and overall health, as well as how to mix them for optimal benefits.

“What’s in honey and lemon juice that’s so good for my health and digestion?”

Honey is an antimicrobial agent, mainly due to an enzyme that can produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, says Nutritional Sciences. This is why honey is rubbed onto external cuts, abrasions, scalds and acne. However, honey maintains the same benefits when you eat it and can therefore relieves some digestive issues, such as some forms of gastritis.

In addition, honey has antioxidant properties that can destroy free radicals that have been tied to tissue deterioration and cancer. Lemon juice, on the other hand, is very acidic due to its high citric acid content. The acidity of lemon juice helps your stomach acid to chemically digest food, which reduces symptoms of common digestive issues like bloating, indigestion and heartburn, as well as provides more nutrients to absorb in your intestines, according to Biochemistry of Human Nutrition.

Lemon juice also has antimicrobial properties and is a great source of vitamin C, which reduces the incidence of infections throughout your gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, lemon contains calcium, magnesium and potassium, and has an alkalising effect on your blood and other tissues, which discourages the proliferation of many different microbes and strengthens your immune system.

“How can I combine honey and lemon juice for better health and digestion?”

Many people find honey too sweet to eat by itself and lemon juice too sour, so mixing the two in water is a good solution. However, Prescription for Nutritional Healing warns that you shouldn’t use boiling water as it will reduce the nutritional value of the honey. Instead, use slightly warm water to dissolve the honey before adding the lemon juice. One teaspoon of honey to two teaspoons of lemon juice in 235 ml warm water is a good ratio.

Another way to use honey and lemon juice for improved health and digestion is to add them to tea – just note that the caffeine and tannins in black tea levels can lead to stomach upset.
