Study finds that over-the-counter magnesium is a better treatment for depression than prescription antidepressants
The study was led by Emily Tarleton, a graduate student in Clinical and Translational Science and the bio nutrition research manager in the University of Vermont’s Clinical Research Center in the United States. Tarleton and her team conducted a clinical trial of over-the-counter oral magnesium tablets on 126 adults in outpatient primary care clinics with mild to moderate depression. The participants had a mean age of 52 and 38% were male.
The team split the participants into two groups – participants in the one group received 248 mg of magnesium per day, while the participants in the other group received no treatment, for six weeks. Tarleton’s team carried out depression symptoms assessments on all participants on a bi-weekly basis.
The team found that magnesium is safe and effective and comparable to prescription antidepressants in terms of effectiveness. They noted that taking over-the-counter magnesium resulted in a significant improvement in measures of depression and anxiety
symptoms after just two weeks. Plus, the supplements were well tolerated and similarly effective regardless of age, sex, the use of antidepressants and other factors.
“This is the first randomized clinical trial looking at the effect of magnesium supplementation on symptoms of depression in US adults,” Tarleton said. “The results are very encouraging, given the great need for additional treatment options for depression and our finding that magnesium supplementation provides a safe, fast and inexpensive approach to controlling depressive symptoms.”
