Sometimes we brush off subtle symptoms like hollowing cheeks or pale lips as “nothing serious” when they may in fact be indicative of a severe health problem.

There are millions of people around the world who suffer from adrenal fatigue and don't know it for this exact reason. While the most prominent symptoms of this very unpleasant health problem are extreme exhaustion and constant cravings for caffeine and salty foods, these aren't the only signs.

#1: You have hollow cheeks
Are your cheeks hollowing out or hollow? Then you may be suffering from serious adrenal fatigue! The biggest cause of this is due to an overconsumption of caffeine and sugar to try and re-energise your body due to fatigued adrenals. But luckily, you can sort this problem out rather easily by taking a look at and adjusting your diet. Skip the collagen injections and cut out the caffeine, sugar and refined carbohydrates instead.

#2: You have lines in your fingertips
Turn your hands over and examine the skin of your fingertips. Do you see smooth, plump fingertips, or is the skin covered with subtle vertical lines? If it’s the latter, you may be suffering from adrenal stress. My own fingertips used to be lined a few years ago, but getting off refined sugar plumped them out nicely within a few months. Plump fingertips are a sign of good adrenal health.
 
#3: You depend on sunglasses
Are you one of those people who can’t stand being out in the bright, midday sun without your shades? Oversensitivity of the eyes to bright light is a sign of adrenal problems from a chronic sodium-potassium imbalance. The imbalance prevents your pupils from properly constricting in response to bright light. The good news is that being out in the sun without your sunnies is a way to strengthen your adrenals.
 
#4: You have pale lips
You may think that pale lips are a sign of ageing, but this is false – it’s a sign of weak adrenals. Chances are, if grains and starches are limited and refined sugar and caffeine is eliminated from your diet, you’ll have youthful, pink lips. One of the most striking things I noticed when I went on the GAPS Diet in June last year to help heal my adrenal fatigue was how colour flooded back into my face and lips Clearly, my adrenals were on the mend!
 
#5: Your lower legs are balding
Do you have bald patches on your lower arms and legs? Or is hair sparser in these areas than what you’re used to? This is a potential sign of adrenal fatigue. Boys entering puberty with sparser beards and leg and arm hair than their peers are frequently those with low adrenal function and an overall lower drive to achieve. Sounds bizarre, but it’s scientifically proven.
 
#6: You have unexplained back or knee pain
Muscle weakness is a common sign of adrenal insufficiency. Unexplained back or knee pain with no accompanying structural defect may indicate weakness of your muscles supporting your pelvis or knees. In the case of lower back pain, chronic adrenal stress leads to weakness in your muscles that support your pelvis. This causes your pelvis to subluxate in a posterior direction. In other words: The lower back pain has nothing to do with your lower back, and everything to do with muscular instability in your pelvis.
