Stress can affect every part of the digestive system,” says Kenneth Koch, professor of medicine, section of gastroenterology and medical director of the Digestive Health Center at Wake Forrest University Baptist Medical Center in the United States. “Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the great German writer and philosopher, believed that the gut was the seat of all human emotions,” adds Koch.
 
For some people, stress and anxiety lead to overeating, which can cause digestive problems like bloat and discomfort. You see, under stress, the mill in your stomach can shut down and make you feel nauseous. Stress can also cause your colon to react in a way that gives your diarrhoea or constipation.

Four tips for practising mindful eating

#1: Breathe
After you sit down to a meal, take five deep breaths before you even lift your fork.
 
#2: Give thanks
Focusing on gratitude stops stress from taking over, so be thankful for the food you’re about to eat.
 
#3: Change your food vocabulary
When making food decisions, banish judgmental language like “guilt” and “I shouldn’t”. If you’re in charge of your food choices, you’ll be in charge of your health and digestion!

#4: Savour and enjoy
Give your full attention to your food and enjoy every bite.
 
Stop stress before it begins and keep your health and digestion in check – it’s as simple as that!
