“What causes migraines?”

Migraines are thought to be caused by inflammation of blood vessels in the brain that trigger the release of certain chemicals. According to researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center in the United States, there are a number of factors that play a role in the development of migraines. “How does fish oil help alleviate migraines?”

Fish oil is brimming with healthy fats that help banish inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids, healthy fats which are most concentrated in fatty fish and fish oil, have been shown to reduce the frequency, severity and duration of migraines.

A study conducted at the University of Cincinnati in the United States found that nine out of 15 migraine sufferers who took fish oil supplements experienced a reduction in the number and intensity of migraines. Another study, this one published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, reported the same results.

“How much fish oil should I take to prevent migraines?”

The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that adults take 1,250 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) per day, which equals to two or three servings of omega-3-rich fatty fish per week.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women as well as children shouldn’t take fish oil supplements unless their doctors directs them to do so.
