You've just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and feel like you're facing what seems like an endless list of new tasks that you to need to incorporate into your everyday lie - testing, injections, monitoring, treating a hypo and the list goes on. Needless to say, it can be very overwhelming!

One of the first question you're likely to ask is what you can eat. But, with so much to take in and learn - not to mention lots of myths about diabetes and food - you could still leave your appointments feeling unsure about the answer. To clear things up for you, here's what you need to know.

To sum it up simply, all kinds of foods are fine for people with type 1 diabetes. In the past, doctors have put patients on very restrictive diet plans because the availability of insulin was limited and the type of insulin treatment was very restrictive, but no longer.
 
Nowadays, insulin treatments are so advanced and are much more flexible than in the past. All you have to do is try and fit the diabetes and insulin around the same healthy, balanced diet that’s recommended for everyone, with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and certain foods from ther other food groups.
