The amazing effects of ginger on blood sugar levels in diabetics
For centuries, people around the world have been using ginger to add a kick to their favourite foods and as a remedy for colds, motion sickness and arthritis pain. Now, it looks like ginger has benefits for your blood sugar levels, too.

A recent study conducted by researchers at Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences in Yazd, Iran, showed that ginger can lower blood sugar n people with type 2 diabetes. For the full findings, keep reading!

Taking ginger capsules can lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, study shows

The research team looked at 88 people with type 2 diabetes. The participants had all been living with the blood sugar disorder for at least 10 years. Furthermore, they were middle-aged and overweight, but not obese.
 
The researchers randomly gave each participant either three daily 1 g capsules of ginger powder or three identical-looking sham capsules in addition to their regular diabetes medications.
 
After eights, the researchers found that the participants in the ginger group saw a significant reduction in their blood sugar levels. “It’s interesting that the ginger group happened to be in worse shape, diabetes-wise, at the beginning of the study, than the placebo group,” commented Martha Howard, MD, medical director of Wellness Associates of Chicago in the United States.

“I was impressed that their fasting blood sugars started at 171 and 136, respectively, and then both groups ended up with similar FBS numbers in the mid-150s,” added Howard. According to the American Diabetes Association, fasting blood sugar levels for people with diabetes are normally between 70 and 130 mg/dl.
 

The researchers aren’t exactly sure how ginger works to lower blood sugar levels…

However, Howard speculated that ginger inhibits hepatic phosphorylase – an enzyme that breaks down glucose storage molecules called glycogen. When glycogen breaks down, blood sugar levels rise, therefore inhibiting this enzyme could theoretically mean lower blood sugar levels for people with type 2 diabetes she explained.
 
If you have type 2 diabetes and your blood sugar levels aren’t where you want them to be, it’s worth giving ginger a try to see if it helps stabilise your levels.
