New cancer research links healthy choices to a reduction in cancer risk and mortality

Professor Peter Elwood of Cardiff University in the United Kingdom and his team examined preliminary data from the UK Biobank. They sorted through the data to identify healthy habits – think following a healthy diet, participating in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight, limiting alcohol intake and not smoking – and compared them to the risk of cancer over a number or years.
 
The team found that together, the collection of healthy choices contributed to a total reduction of about one-third in cancer risk and possibly a greater reduction in cancer mortality. But are these results really that surprising? Not really...

Most people already know that a healthy lifestyle have some general benefit

If this weren’t the case, then no one would be ‘healthy’. The problem is that up until now, there hasn’t been any solid cancer research to prove that making healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent chronic diseases like cancer.
 
The next step is for researchers to use this research to make useful and realistic lifestyle recommendations. “Perhaps the advice to take up one additional healthy behaviour is the most acceptable message for most subjects,” said Professor Elwood.
 
He continued: “In our study, each additional healthy behaviour was associated with a reduction of about 8% in cancer, independent of the effects of the other behaviours. The take-home message is that healthy behaviours have a truly tangible benefit.”
 
One thing this cancer research highlights is that a healthy lifestyle has benefits additional to better overall health – plus, it costs nothing and has no undesirable side effects!
