Treating rheumatoid arthritis within six months yields better results in the long run, British study finds
After many years of wear and tear on your body, you may become increasingly worried about developing arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a certain type of the joint inflammation disease that's characterised by inflammation of your peripheral joints of your shoulders, hands, wrists, elbows, hips, knees, feet and usually on both sides of your body.

According to a brand new British study published online in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology, catching rheumatoid arthritis in its tracks and treating it within six months may make for better outcomes, including lower odds of early death and a better future. Read on for the full scoop...

British study links treating rheumatoid arthritis within six months to better results in the long run

To reach their findings, researchers behind the study looked at 600 patients who were initially diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis – a type of autoimmune disease – between 1990 and 1994. They tracked these patients for 20 years in total.

During the study period, researchers analysed key signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, including swollen or tender joints and indications of disability. They also noted all cases of death.

Researchers found that patients who began treatment for their rheumatoid arthritis within six months after their first symptoms appeared tended to have no higher levels of disability over the 20-year study period, compared to those who didn’t get treatment.

Furthermore, while roughly 44% of the patients died during the study period, researchers found that patients who were treated within six months were less likely to suffer early death and did better in the long run.

Researchers say that their study highlights the benefits of early treatment for rheumatoid arthritis patients

“This research emphasises the importance of early treatment and the long-term benefits of early treatment,” reported Dr Suzanne Verstappen, from the University of Manchester in the UK, in a university news release.

“In the early 1990s when this study started, only 30% of patients received early treatment, but this number has increased significantly in the last decade. It’s expected that in the next 10 years, newly diagnosed patients will have a better future with respect to functional ability, less severe disease activity and improved quality of life,” Dr Verstappen concluded.
